Flying Easy with Extreme Sports Gear: Smart Baggage Tips with Pegasus Airlines

Imagine the moment before the drop. Your heart is knocking against your ribs, the wind is rising off the cliff, and every piece of kit you trained with is exactly where it should be, because it arrived with you. That is the whole point of this guide. The thrill happens at the destination, and the stress of getting your skis, board, bike or dive bag there should be the most boring part of your trip. Pick a flight to Türkiye and a sport, and let us handle the baggage.

Türkiye is made for adventure: powder in the east, wind on the Aegean, reefs and cliffs on the Mediterranean, and thermals above Fethiye. This guide walks you through each sport, what Pegasus asks of your gear and where to take it. Start with cheap flights to Istanbul or fly straight to the mountain or the coast, and keep your energy up with Pegasus Café’s pre-order menu. Don’t forget you can order your meal up to 24 hours before the flight! For the full list of sports and where to try them, browse our extreme sports page.

Know Your Bags: The Pegasus Baggage Basics

Before the gear, the basics. Your fare bundle decides what you carry. On international flights, the Light bundle includes just a small under-seat bag (up to 40 x 30 x 15 cm and 3 kg), while Saver, Saver Plus and Comfort Flex add a cabin bag and a 20 kg checked bag. Domestic bundles differ slightly, so check the baggage allowance page for your exact flight. Add extra baggage before you get to the airport, which is cheaper than paying at the gate, through the additional baggage page or Manage My Booking. For a wider look at how it all fits together, read The Smart Traveler’s Toolkit: Booking, Baggage & Beyond and From Boarding to Baggage: Small Choices That Change a Trip.

  • Sports gear is special equipment: Skis, bikes, golf sets, surfboards and diving kit are treated as special equipment, and a fee applies. The exact amount depends on your route, so check the rules and fees table before you pack.
  • Tell us early: Pegasus recommends contacting the call center before your flight to request that your special equipment be added.
  • Oversized items: Anything oversized is checked under the aircraft, never carried in the cabin.
  • Total cost: A low fare plus a bag is still a smart trade, but compare the full cost first. Our guide on how to find cheap flights shows how, and the upgrade package includes checked luggage if you would rather bundle everything.

Snow Gear: Skis and Snowboards

Picture the first chairlift of the morning: the pines frosted white, the air so cold it squeaks, your edges ready. Türkiye’s ski scene is one of the best-kept secrets in Europe, with dry powder, long runs and far fewer crowds than the Alps. Our Alps Vibes, Türkiye Prices: Where to Ski This Winter covers Uludağ, Erciyes, Palandöken, Sarıkamış, Kartalkaya and Davraz. Feeling the Olympic spirit? • Packing rules: A ski set must include at least two of: skis or a snowboard, poles, boots or a helmet. Use a sturdy, special case, cover the sharp edges and keep other personal belongings out of the case.
  • Where to go: Erciyes near Kayseri, Palandöken near Erzurum, and Sarıkamış near Kars. Read more about the east in Snowy Peaks and Icy Lakes.
  • Getting there: Fly to Kayseri with cheap flights to Kayseri, to Erzurum with cheap flights to Erzurum, or to Kars with cheap flights to Kars.

Water Gear: Diving, Surf and Kite

Now trade the cold for salt. The Aegean wind fills your sail on one coast, and on another you slip beneath the surface into a silent blue world of shipwrecks and reefs. Both need gear that arrives intact, so it pays to know the rules. Dive sites and beginner tips are in Best Diving in Türkiye, and windy, shallow lagoons feature in Ride the Wind: The Best Kitesurfing Spots in Europe and Türkiye.

  • Diving rules: A dive set needs at least two items, such as a wetsuit, mask, fins or regulator. Tanks must be completely empty with the valve left open, and batteries must be packed separately. A buoyancy vest must be deflated and no heavier than 25 kg, and dive lights need prior approval. Label the bag as diving equipment.
  • Surfboards: Short boards can be up to 145 cm, and long boards range from 145 to 280 cm. If you are unsure which category your board falls in, check with the call center.
  • Kites: Kites are listed among the special items that can travel with Pegasus, so pack them securely and add them to your booking in advance.
  • Getting there: Fly to Izmir for Alaçatı with cheap flights to Izmir, to Bodrum for Gökova Bay with cheap flights to Bodrum, or to Antalya for Kaş and Kalkan with cheap flights to Antalya.

Sky Gear: Paragliding and the Thermals of Fethiye

Few sensations match running off a mountain and feeling the air take your weight. Above Ölüdeniz, the lagoon spreads below you like spilled turquoise paint, and the whole coast slides past in silence. If you are bringing your own glider, paragliders are listed among the special items Pegasus can carry, so tell the call center in advance and pack it in a suitable bag. For more adrenaline destinations, see For Thrill Seekers Only: Cities for Adrenaline and Extreme Sports.

  • Where to go: Fethiye and Ölüdeniz for paragliding, plus Antalya for canyoning and rafting.
  • Getting there: Fly to Dalaman with cheap flights to Dalaman, about an hour from Fethiye.

Two Wheels and a Set of Clubs: Bikes and Golf

Cyclists and golfers are the quiet pros of baggage packing, and the rules are simple once you know them. Bikes and clubs both travel as special equipment, so add them to your booking and pack them with care.

  • Bicycles: Only non-motorized bikes are accepted. Place the bike in a protective case with the pedals removed or folded inward, the handlebars turned to the side and the tires deflated. The case should go inside a sturdy cardboard box or special packaging.
  • Golf: The maximum weight is 20 kg. A golf set must include at least two of: clubs, balls, shoes, a tee device or a golf bag. Use the golf bag for transport and keep personal belongings out of it.
  • Hikers and campers: Poles, boots and tents are easier. See our Top 7 Treks in Türkiye and the Lycian Way guide for ideas on where to take them.

Pack Like a Pro: The Last-Minute Checklist

A calm departure day starts the night before. Weigh your bags, photograph the gear and its case, and keep a small stash of essentials in your cabin bag in case your checked bag takes a bit longer. Check the baggage allowance page one more time, confirm with the call center that your equipment is on your booking and give yourself extra time at the airport.

  • Protect: Use a sturdy case, cover sharp edges and keep other personal items out of the sports case.
  • Label: Mark your bag with your name and the type of equipment, especially for diving gear.
  • Book early: Add baggage and equipment before you reach the airport.
  • Plan your route: Check out the Pegasus route map to find the closest airport to your sport.

With the bag sorted, the rest is the fun part. A cheap flight ticket to Türkiye plus a bit of planning means you land ready to ride, dive, ski or fly. Spend the energy you saved on the adventure, and leave the baggage worries behind.
