Our Initiatives Towards Expanding Sustainability Culture Across the Value Chain

Our Initiatives Towards Expanding Sustainability Culture Across the Value Chain

Our Scope 1/2/3 Impact

According to standards developed by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are reported in terms of Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions.

Scope 1 corresponds to direct GHG emissions from sources owned or controlled by the reporting company. For example, emissions from the combustion of jet fuel on aircraft are considered Scope 1 emissions for the airline.

Scope 2 corresponds to GHG emissions from the generation of purchased electricity consumed by the reporting company. For example, emissions from utility energy production to cover use in the airline's offices are considered Scope 2 emissions for the airline.

Scope 3 corresponds to all other indirect emissions. Some examples of Scope 3 activities are emissions created while transporting purchased fuels or emissions caused by using products and services.

Our Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) Reports cover the measurement and reporting of 100% of our Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions and a significant portion of our Scope 3 emissions.

2021 was the first year we ran a detailed Scope 3 calculation. Our Scope 3 mainly consisted of purchased goods and services, capital goods, fuel, energy-related activities not included in Scope 1 and 2, and employee commuting.

According to the report, 79.5% of our emissions were Scope 1, Scope 2 emissions accounted for 0.2%, and Scope 3 emissions accounted for 20.3%. 99.44% of our Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions arose from our jet A1 fuel consumption. Also, the primary source of our Scope 3 emissions came from fuel sources not included in Scope 1 and 2, accounting for 81% of that total.

Key Sustainability Performance Indicators

We regularly monitor certain non-financial key performance indicators in our operations relating to flight safety, carbon emissions, waste management, customer satisfaction, employee composition, professional and organisational development, succession planning, operational efficiency, and the Board of Directors’ effectiveness, among others.

In 2021, we launched a process to consolidate and share certain aspects of this performance monitoring as part of our Corporate Sustainability actions. While we continue our work to identify better reporting platforms, see an overview of these indicators as published in our 2021 Annual Report can below:
