August is the month when we feel the joy of summer most; we’re so happy, it’s as if we’ve been captivated by the world’s most beautiful song. And for Switzerland, August has an extra significance: Swiss National Day. Every year since 1891, without fail, the city has celebrated the signing of the Federal Charter in 1291. The celebration has been an official national festival for twenty-two years now, with festivities taking place in the Swiss capital of Basel, as well as all over the rest of the country. Thanks to the celebrations and activities, the beauty of the Rheine stands out even more, almost as if it has been dressed in a multi-coloured gown. Firework displays, water sports, theatre and concerts are organised throughout the day, and a multitude of food stands are ready to serve you up a feast. Swiss National Day delights all five senses, bringing Basel alive with colour, and shows off the country in its most celebratory mood.
