Things to Do in Hungary

If you decide to visit Hungary, be prepared to see a lot of surprising things in the streets. People here are unlike anywhere else, but if you were to draw a comparison, you would say they are more similar to the Scandinavians than to the Europeans. Do you like spicy food? Great! That is precisely the specialty of the Hungarian cuisine. The local goulash will drive your tastebuds mad, passionately mad.

  • Hungarian Parliament Building: Inspired by the British House of Parliament and located on the banks of Danube gathers most of the political issues of the nation and, at the same time, masses of tourists from all around the world. The guided tours are highly recommended, and for time-saving purposes, it is best to print the ticket before going there; otherwise, you will waste a lot of time queuing for the Visitor Centre desk. Once you are there, the architecture will stun you with its size and sophistication. Get ready for an unforgettable tour!
  • Budapest Evening Sightseeing Cruise: A very affordable way to experience the charming side of the city; during the 1-hour sightseeing cruise, you will see all the things worth seeing at the Banks of the Danube, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There is no option to have a guided tour, but audio tours are available at extra cost. Especially recommended to the people preferring a relaxed way of sightseeing.
  • Halaszbastya: The construction of Halaszbastya – the Fishermen's Bastion – will satisfy your expectations. The magnificent decorative fortification and the straight-from-Disneyland towers will make you immediately want to take a picture. There is no entrance fee, but to see some parts of the towers, you will need to pay a small amount. There is also a cafe on the terrace, where you can contemplate the city's outlook while drinking a warm cappuccino.
  • Danube River: This is the river that was historically separating two cities from each other: Buda and Pest, which would later become one – Budapest. You can spend some slow time here, walking along the coast of the river and admire the city's beauty, with the Buda hills spreading in front of your eyes. The views are stunning and the experience impossible to describe with any satisfactory precision – you have to see it for yourself!
  • Budapest Pinball Museum: You have seen all the most important sites and buildings in the city, but you still want more? The Pinball Museum, the biggest pinball exhibition in Europe, is something you might want to go to! Each table there has its part in the great timeline of the pinball machines. A great choice for the enthusiasts of the non-obvious entertainments.
  • Sziget Festival: One of the largest music festivals in Europe held every August in the Northern part of the city. This is an excellent experience for people who enjoy dwelling in all forms of arts and culture, with over 1000 performances taking place each year. The tickets are pricey, but attendance should be worth every penny for the music connoisseurs.

Things to Know Before Visiting Hungary

  • The country is considered to be very safe; walking alone in any neighborhood at any point in the day should not cause any troubles.
  • The local currency is the Hungarian forint, and it is better to buy some currencies before leaving your country of origin due to the unfavorable exchange rates in Hungary.
  • The official language is Hungarian but communicating in English is easy. Hungarians are known for being multilinguists, so who knows, maybe the person you will ask about directions will speak your mother tongue!
  • If you have a hand and taste for cooking, be sure to bring some of the local Paprika back with you – it is an excellent way to enrich your kitchen's possibilities and let the memories of the Hungarian food stay fresh for longer!
  • Businesses are open according to the European norms – no shop should be closed before 5 PM; as usually in West, Middle, and East Europe, there are usually no breaks during the day.
