Do I Need a Visa to Travel to Kazakhstan?

Nationals of foreign countries must apply for entry visas in order to visit Kazakhstan. However, citizens of certain countries are part of the visa-free regime as a result of bilateral agreements between countries. The extensive list of countries whose nationals can travel to Kazakhstan without a visa obligation and the allowed duration of their stays are available online. Those who can visit Kazakhstan without a visa will be able to stay in the country up to 90 days within 180 days as of July 2020. Single entry e-visas are also available for citizens of certain countries.

Kazakhstan Visa Types

Different visa types apply for entering Kazakhstan. They are broadly categorized on the basis of short or long term stays. Visas are also issued depending on the nature of the intended visit and the requested entry numbers as single-entry or multiple-entry visas for visits up to 90 days in periods of 180 days. Single-entry visa grants one time entrance. Double-entry visa holders may travel twice in fixed periods and multiple-entry visa enables for numerous visits to Kazakhstan.

Type C (Short-term Stay) Visa

Short-term visa is issued in line with the requested days indicated by the traveler for non-immigration purposes and for stays that are not exceeding 90 days unless stated otherwise.

Kazakhstan Tourist Visa

Tourist visa (B12) for Kazakhstan is given to third nationals who would like to visit the country for only tourism and entertainment related purposes. Tourist travel visa are granted with single or multiple entry options and different fees apply.

Kazakhstan Visa for Business and Fair Visits

Business visa (B1, B2, B3) for Kazakhstan is granted to foreign nationals who wish to travel for exclusively business reasons whether it is for the purpose of attending conferences, exhibitions or engaging in commercial activities. Single entry visa of В1, В2, В3 category is issued for up to 90 days while multiple В1 and В3 grants stay up to 1 year and multiple В2 is issued for stays up to 180 days.

Kazakhstan Visa for Visit to Family, Relatives and Friends

Travels to Kazakhstan is possible with the purpose of visiting family, friends or close relatives. The applicant can submit a short stay visitor visa upon submission of a valid invitation letter.

Kazakhstan Visa for Cultural, Sports Activities and Participation to Conferences

Travelers who would like to visit Kazakhstan with the purpose of joining cultural or sports related activities can apply for short stay visitor visas. A letter of intent explaining the details of activity and purchased tickets or event schedules shall be presented during the application. A visa for taking part in religious activities under category B6 can be issued to persons seeking to attend the religious association activities but excluding the missionary activities. It enables the holder to visit Kazakhstan with one time entry for stays up tp 90 days.

Kazakhstan Visa for Short-term Education and Traineeship

Foreign nationals who would like to go to Kazakhstan for short-term education or practical training and internship purposes can also apply for B7 visa. Single entry visa grants stays up to 90 days while the multiple entry visa  enables the holder to remain in Kazakhstan for up to 180 days.

Type D (Long-term Stay) Visa

Long-term visa grants its holder the right to enter to Kazakhstan for periods extending up to one year with the possibility of multiple entry.

Those who would like to travel to the Republic of Kazakhstan upon admission to education institutions shall apply for education visa under C9 category. Attendants of organized exchange programs and preparatory courses can also apply for this type of visa.

On the other hand, C2 visa is issued for family reunification under specific circumstances. is Individuals with family members who are holding citizenship of the Republic of Kazakhstan and are permanently residing in the country, as well as ethnic Kazakhs and former compatriots are given a temporary residence permit for periods not exceeding more than two years.

Those who seek to go to Kazakhstan for employment reasons shall apply for C3, C4, C5, C6 visas, including independent employment in priority sectors.  C3 type of visa grants single entry for stays up to 90 days while multiple C3 gives the right to stay for up to 3 years in Kazakhstan. Depending on the duration of the work permit, single and multiple C4, C5, C6 visas can be issued.

Investor visa-A5 is given to the heads and/or deputy heads of businesses and their family members who seek to engage in investment activities in Kazakhstan.

Foreigners who would like to have permanent residence in Kazakhstan shall apply for B8 type of visa.

Kazakhstan Transit Visa

Kazakhstan transit visa (B13) allows travelers to pass through the country’s international zone without entering the national territory.

General Requirements to Apply for Kazakhstan Visa

Tourist visa application requirements to visit Kazakhstan are explained under certain sections depending on your employment status. Applicants must submit their applications that includes the requested documents. Applications shall be made to the Diplomatic Missions or authorized visa application centers in applicant’s country of residence. Please be aware that the visa application requirements may change depending on the applicant's country of residence and category of visa.

Kazakhstan Visa Applications

  1. A passport with at minimum two blank pages and is valid for at least 90 days after the end of travel. Copy of the first page including personal data and previous Schengen visas if obtained.
  2. Completed and signed visa application form along with one color biometric photo that is not older than 6 months.
  3. Proof of travel with confirmed both-way tickets.
  4. Bank account details proving that the passenger can sufficiently fund his/her travel.
  5. Evidence of occupation in the form of certified documents through employer letter, student certificate, document of registration or demonstration of pension funds.
  6. Accommodation details through an invitation letter or proof of your hotel reservation throughout your stay.
  7. Documentation of travel health insurance that will cover up to 30.000 euros throughout the period of travel and is valid within the entire Schengen area.

There are specific documents to enclose your application depending on your employment status.

Employed:

  • Employment contract (original certificate of employment indicating the position in the company and the salary)
  • Bank account statement of the past 6 months
  • Approval letter of leave from employer
  • Income Tax Return (ITR)

Self-employed:

  • Proof of business license (company registration)
  • Company’s bank account statement of the past 6 months
  • Income Tax Return (ITR)

Student:

  • Documentation of University enrollment
  • No-objection certificate from school management

Retired:

  • Pension statement documenting the past 6 months

Unemployed:

  • Proof of financial resources is nevertheless required
  • If the person is not able to finance his/her own expenses, proof of a sponsor is mandatory.

What is Visa Sponsorship for Kazakhstan?

Students or unemployed/retired people who are not in a position to cover their own travel expenses will need to demonstrate support from a sponsor who will borne the full costs. Otherwise, your sponsor who must be a first-grade relative will have to prove the sufficient resources through meeting certain requirements such as filling out the sponsorship form and submitting the requested documents. Kazakhstan Visa Rules

  • Dual nationality is not recognised in Kazakhstan meaning that those who enter the country on a Kazakh passport but hold another nationality at the same time cannot benefit from other country’s consular services.
  • Nationals of countries that do not have any diplomatic mission of Kazakhstan can be issued pre-arranged visas on arrival which will enable stays up to one month. However, an invitation letter and approval from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan is required. It costs about 80 USD.
  • The government in Kazakhstan applies certain limits regarding the amount of foreign currency that can be imported or exported. Also, specific goods can be subject to national custom regulations.

Citizens of Russian Federation can travel to Kazakhstan without visa obligations for stays up to 90 days.

Kazakhstan visa for European countries

Citizens of all EU member states can benefit from visa-free travel opportunities to visit Kazakhstan for stays not exceeding 30 days.

Kazakhstan Visa requirement for US, UK, and Canadian citizens

  • US citizens with US passports can visit Kazakhstan without a visa requirement for stays up to a month for short-term travel purposes. However, there are currency restrictions upon entry and exit that should amount to 10.000 USD.
  • UK citizens are not obliged to apply for an entry visa to travel to Kazakhstan provided that they will not stay more than 30 days in the country. Those who would like to stay more than a month shall apply for a visa.
  • Canadian citizens are not requested to get an entry visa to travel to Kazakhstan for stays up to 30 days.
